The Employees’ State Insurance (ESIC) Act,1948 (34 of 1948), as enacted and published in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary, Dated April 19, 1948, has brought a new era in the field of social insurance legislation in India. Prior to this enactment, there was no social insurance legislation.
The ESIC Act is legislation which aims at bringing about social justice to the economically weak labour class of the land. Its aims at the labour, employee & staff welfare, which is an elastic term bearing somewhat different interpretation in one country from another according to different social customs the degree of industrialization and the educational development of the workers.

The ESIC Act, 1948 is the first of its kind in India for the it introduces the compulsory insurance of a specified class of wage earners Up to 21000 per month against certain inevitable risks and to uphold the human dignity of fellow feeling in contingencies, such as death, disease or physical disability that results in deprivation of basic needs like food, clothing and more particularly medical care. The ESIC offers an attractive and need-based insurance cover to the low paid workers of organized sector, inter alia, providing health insurance for the dependents of the IP (insured person). The scheme is a self -financial whereby every contributor is either a beneficiary or a benefactor.
